Do you give yourself enough credit?
I want to share with you a true story about impostor syndrome I have recently witnessed.
Last Friday night…we danced on tabletops…not really. Our leisure is much more prosaic than Katy Perry’s.
We went to a Candlelight concert to listen to the string band performing Beatles.
It was an inspiring experience and a type of meditation. But one thing got me thinking about the fact that the best of us tend to not give ourselves enough credit for our talent, professionalism or hard work.
There were four musicians. Three of them played violin and the fourth one played cello. One musician, who also acted as an announcer, presented his colleagues to the audience.
A woman played the first violin. He introduced her as a big star of their group.
And she was undoubtedly good.
She played so passionately and gave all her heart to the audience. She was, indeed, the leading star of the performance.
However, she didn’t feel comfortable being praised in front of her peer musicians. She shook her head, refusing to acknowledge her talent.
It was sad to witness.
I bet she spent thousands of hours mastering her skills, developing her musical ear, practicing her craft.
But she felt uncomfortable being recognized for her career accomplishments.
And since that Friday night, the question of WHY many of us would have the same reaction has been bugging me.
Always remember that your self perception reflects on the world and people around you.
Stay humble, but fair to yourself and your professional achievements.
You deserve to be noticed and appreciated for your work.
Simply give yourself credit.
Do you?
